Before beginning the riding therapy an assessment is required to establish the initial therapeutic targets depending on the pathology and in order to exclude any contraindication.
Although hippotherapy addresses a large number of afflictions, there are some pathologies to which using horse therapy is contraindicated. In these cases the horse’s movements would aggravate the pathology even more instead of developing beneficial effects.
Contraindications
- Congenital hip dislocation
- Evolving scoliosis
- Spina bifida
- Epilepsy not controlled by medication
- Osteoporosis
- Recent surgeries
